Aging population and labor trends in Germany

Overview

Demographic shifts in Germany are driving a significant increase in employment rates among older populations across different states.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the employment rate for individuals aged 55 to 64 rose from 42.9 percent in 2005 to 72.7 percent in 2025. Similarly, the 65 to 74 age bracket saw employment increase from 4.3 percent to 17.5 percent over the same period. This trend is linked to rising retirement ages and reduced incentives for early retirement, posing challenges for the German ‘Mittelstand’ as large cohorts prepare to exit the workforce.

In Hesse, a similar upward trend is reported. Employment for the 55 to 64 age group increased from 46.9 percent in 2005 to 75.0 percent in 2025. Participation in the 65 to 74 age group also grew from 5.9 percent to 18.1 percent. Among those in the 65 to 74 bracket receiving a statutory old-age pension in Hesse, 13.8 percent remained employed in 2025.
