North Rhine-Westphalia prosecutors investigate toxic waste scandal

Prosecutors in North Rhine-Westphalia are investigating more than 40 suspects in a major environmental crime scandal involving the illegal dumping of tons of pollutant-contaminated soil. The investigation, conducted by the Dortmund Public Prosecutor's Office and the Central Office for the Prosecution of Environmental Crime (ZeUK), covers various locations across the state.

In the Garzweiler open-cast mine complex alone, twelve suspects are under investigation. These individuals, primarily from the construction materials sector, are accused of dumping large quantities of contaminated excavated soil. One specific investigation targets a managing director from Grevenbroich, his son, and four others, who allegedly forged thousands of delivery documents to avoid the high costs of proper disposal.

Authorities are also investigating several construction managers for suspected commercial bribery. The long-running investigation, known as the ‘Boden NRW’ complex, has seen significant raids and searches throughout 2024 and 2025. To date, two indictments have been issued, including one against a repeat offender currently in custody.
