Environmental crime investigations in Germany

Overview

Authorities in Germany are conducting various investigations into illegal waste disposal. In mid-October, police reported two separate incidents: the dumping of over 100 old tires in Laderholz and the illegal disposal of construction debris near a forest in Mochental, Baden-Württemberg.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, a larger-scale investigation known as the ‘Boden NRW’ complex is targeting the illegal dumping of tons of pollutant-contaminated soil. Prosecutors are investigating more than 40 suspects, many from the construction materials sector, regarding activities at various locations including the Garzweiler open-cast mine. The investigation includes allegations of forging delivery documents to avoid disposal costs and suspected commercial bribery. To date, two indictments have been issued as part of this ongoing inquiry.
