Germany reaches multiple sector-wide wage agreements
Multiple labor agreements have been reached across various sectors in Germany, impacting hundreds of thousands of workers.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the retail sector reached a deal between the union ver.di and employers. Approximately 700,000 employees will receive a 3 percent wage increase starting in August 2026, followed by an additional 2 percent in May 2027. The minimum wage in this sector will rise to 14.20 euros and eventually 14.90 euros. While the union views this as a victory following warning strikes, employers described it as a “painful compromise” that reaches their economic limits.
In the wholesale and foreign trade sector across Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, a deal for 70,000 employees includes a two-step increase of 2.9 percent effective August 1, 2026, and 2.1 percent in May 2027. The agreement also includes increased compensation for apprentices.
In Saxony-Anhalt, the food industry reached an agreement for 2,300 employees. This deal aims to gradually close the wage gap between eastern and western Germany by 2032. The agreement follows a period of intense industrial action, including significant strikes in the sector.
