North Sea rescue: Three sailors saved after yacht runs aground

Three sailors—a Pole, a Russian, and a Ukrainian—were rescued from a Polish yacht after it ran aground in the North Sea on September 29, 2026. The approximately 11-meter vessel was traveling from Denmark to Spain when an engine failure forced the crew to attempt to reach the port of Langeoog. During the maneuver, the yacht became stuck on a sandbank in the Accumer Ee channel between the islands of Baltrum and Langeoog.

The situation was critical due to receding tides, strong currents, and waves reaching 1.5 meters. The wind was recorded at 4 to 5 on the Beaufort scale. As the water level dropped, the yacht was repeatedly tossed against the hard seabed, creating a risk of the vessel capsizing.

Following a Mayday signal received by Bremen Rescue Radio shortly before 5:15 AM, the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) coordinated a response involving units from Langeoog, Baltrum, and Norderney. After two unsuccessful attempts due to shallow water and darkness, rescuers from Langeoog on the vessel SECRETARIUS successfully passed a tow line to the yacht on their third attempt. The crew was safely towed to the port at Langeoog without injuries.
