North Sea maritime rescue operations

Overview

In late September 2026, two separate maritime rescue operations occurred in the North Sea involving sailing vessels.

On September 26, a ten-meter catamaran traveling from Scandinavia to Portugal suffered a mast failure near the island of Wangerooge. After a distress call was received, the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) and Federal Police responded. Rescuers treated the skipper for severe seasickness and towed the vessel to the port of Hooksiel after removing the broken rigging.

On September 29, an 11-meter Polish yacht carrying a crew of three ran aground on a sandbank in the Accumer Ee channel between Baltrum and Langeoog following an engine failure. The crew faced risks from receding tides and strong currents. After two failed attempts due to darkness and shallow water, the DGzRS vessel SECRETARIUS successfully towed the yacht to the port of Langeoog.
