North Sea squid populations surge due to rising water temperatures

Rising water temperatures in the North Sea are driving a significant shift in marine ecosystems, leading to an influx of squid and octopus species along the Belgian coast. Scientific data indicates that surface temperatures in 2025 were 0.9 degrees Celsius warmer than the 1997–2021 average, creating an ideal environment for cephalopod eggs, which require temperatures between 9 and 11 degrees Celsius to survive.

This warming trend has seen the southern, shallower parts of the North Sea increase in temperature by four degrees over the last century. As a result, traditional catches like cod and crab are being supplemented or replaced by massive quantities of squid and octopus. The decline in cod reproduction due to heat is further reducing competition for these new arrivals. Tom Premereur, Director of the Flemish Fish Auction, noted that while fishermen caught almost no squid eight or nine years ago, they now find them making up the majority of their catches.
