Vietnam targets December 2027 start for North-South high-speed railway
Vietnam's Ministry of Construction has set a target to commence construction of the North-South high-speed railway project by December 2027. The massive infrastructure undertaking is estimated to require an investment of approximately $67.34 billion.
To support the project's technological independence, the Ministry is reviewing six strategic technology tasks. These include mastering the design and production of rails, fasteners, and sleepers, as well as developing 5G networks specifically for railway operations and advanced computer interlocking systems.
Progress varies across different components of the national rail network. For the Lao Cai-Hanoi-Hai Phong line, construction of station infrastructure at five locations began in late 2025. However, in Nghe An province, the disbursement of funds for resettlement projects related to the high-speed line has reached only 17%, with significant funds still unspent.
