National Nutrition Agency plans marketplace to support Indonesia's Free Nutritious Meal program
The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) is implementing several measures to stabilize and improve Indonesia’s Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program. To ensure food quality and supply, BGN Head Sudaryono announced plans to develop a dedicated marketplace for raw materials. This initiative aims to prevent shortages, such as chicken supply issues in regions outside Java, and to maintain strict nutritional standards.
However, the program faces significant operational challenges. Recent incidents of suspected food poisoning have occurred in several regions, including Kulonprogo, where the SPPG Palihan facility was temporarily suspended after 41 people reported digestive issues, and Kendari, where 57 students fell ill. BGN is currently conducting laboratory tests on food samples to determine the causes of these incidents.
Public and institutional scrutiny is also increasing. The P2G advocacy group has called for the program's termination, citing the burden on teachers and the agency's failure to prevent poisoning. Meanwhile, BGN DIY has reprimanded an employee for mocking victims of food poisoning on social media. On a positive note, the program has boosted local economies in some areas, such as Batu City, where the demand for local oranges from SPPG kitchens has significantly increased their market price.
