The Brazilian government has announced a R$ 270 million subsidy to support independent sugar cane producers in the Northeast region for the 2025/2026 harvest. The measure, authorized by Provisional Measure No. 1,374/2026, provides a payment of R$ 12 per ton of cane sold to help producers mitigate economic losses caused by climate issues, falling international sugar prices, and a 50% tariff imposed by the United States.

During a meeting in João Pessoa with representatives from the Association of Sugar Cane Growers of Paraíba (Asplan) and the National Supply Company (Conab), Minister of Agriculture André de Paula detailed the program. The initiative is expected to benefit approximately 16,000 to 17,000 producers across Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, and Rio Grande do Norte, potentially supporting 60,000 jobs.

In addition to the subsidy, local leaders such as João Pessoa Mayor Leo Bezerra and Chamber of Deputies President Hugo Motta discussed the need for continued federal support for family farming and the strengthening of cooperatives. Motta highlighted his role in articulating this economic response to protect the regional sector from market volatility.
