Northeast Frontier Railway completes LHB coach conversion and solar expansion

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has reached several operational milestones regarding infrastructure modernization and green energy. The railway has completed the conversion of all long-distance passenger trains within its network from conventional Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches to modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches. This transition covers 103 long-distance services, including 55 NFR services and 48 from other zones, and incorporates advanced safety features such as fire and smoke detection systems.

In terms of sustainability, NFR has expanded its solar power capacity to 42.1 MWp. Between January and July 2026, the zone commissioned 23.7 MWp of solar capacity, the highest among all Indian Railways zonal railways. This initiative resulted in approximately 114 lakh units of solar power generation during the 2025-26 financial year, leading to savings of roughly Rs. 8.6 crores, a significant increase over the previous year.

Additionally, NFR has managed service disruptions due to track settlement near New Harangajao station. Restoration work has led to the cancellation or rescheduling of several train services, including the Guwahati-Silchar Express and the Agartala-Rani Kamalapati Express, while operations continue on alternative lines with enhanced safety measures.
