Northeast Frontier Railway operations and safety

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has continued its focus on infrastructure stability, safety modernization, and service expansion throughout 2026.

To mitigate monsoon-related landslides on the Lumding-Badarpur hill section, the NFR has utilized 1,000 geobags to reinforce weakened slopes. Ongoing restoration work near New Harangajao due to track settlement on Line-1 and Line-2 has necessitated train cancellations and rescheduling, affecting services such as the Guwahati-Silchar Express and the Agartala-Rani Kamalapati Express.

Technical and safety upgrades have progressed with the implementation of the Kavach system in over 130 electric locomotives, the installation of 30 hot box detectors, and three automatic train examination systems. A major milestone was the successful completion of the transition for all long-distance passenger trains from conventional Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches to modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches. This transition covered 103 long-distance services, incorporating advanced Fire and Smoke Detection Systems (FSDS).

Service expansion has seen significant growth with 14 pairs of new services, including Vande Bharat Sleeper and Amrit Bharat trains, alongside a new MEMU service between Agartala and Karimganj. Connectivity also reached a milestone in July 2026 with the first container train from India to Nepal.

Sustainability and financial performance have also improved. NFR reached a total installed solar capacity of 42.1 MWp as of July 2026, commissioning 23.7 MWp between January and July—the highest among all Indian Railways zonal railways. This solar initiative generated approximately 114 lakh units of power during the 2025-26 financial year, resulting in savings of roughly Rs. 8.6 crores. Financially, the NFR reported an 8 percent increase in operating income between April and July 2026, totaling 2,744 crore rupees.
