Northeast Frontier Railway announces major infrastructure projects in Guwahati
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is implementing several major infrastructure projects in Guwahati to address rising passenger demand and improve connectivity across Northeast India. The Guwahati Railway Station currently manages over 50,000 daily passengers, a figure that increases to approximately 65,000 during peak seasons.
Key initiatives include the Kamakhya-Guwahati 3rd Line Project, a 5.74 km expansion costing Rs 467 crore, which is slated for completion by 2028. Additionally, the Agthori-Kamakhya Double Line Project and the construction of a second Saraighat Rail-cum-Road Bridge have been sanctioned at Rs 1,474 crore. This project features a 1.3-km bridge with a double-line railway track and a three-lane road to ease pressure on existing crossings over the Brahmaputra.
To improve maintenance and terminal capabilities, a Mega Coaching Complex is being built at New Guwahati for Rs 227 crore. This facility will include three pit lines, four stabling lines, and two automatic coach-washing plants. Furthermore, redevelopment efforts are underway at the Guwahati and Kamakhya stations to modernize passenger amenities and accessibility.
