Northeast Frontier Railway infrastructure development
Overview
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is undertaking several major infrastructure projects to enhance connectivity and capacity in Northeast India. In Guwahati, initiatives include the Kamakhya-Guwahati 3rd Line Project, a 5.74 km expansion costing Rs 467 crore slated for completion by 2028, and the Agthori-Kamakhya Double Line Project. To ease pressure on Brahmaputra crossings, a second Saraighat Rail-cum-Road Bridge is being constructed at a cost of Rs 1,474 crore, featuring a 1.3-km bridge with a double-line railway track and a three-lane road.
To modernize amenities, a Mega Coaching Complex is being established at New Guwahati for Rs 227 crore, featuring pit lines and automatic coach-washing plants. Additionally, NFR has inaugurated ‘The Terminal’ at Guwahati Railway Station, a 27,381-square-foot dining, shopping, and recreation facility developed under the New Innovative Non-Fare Revenue Ideas Scheme (NINFRIS).
NFR is also prioritizing environmental and operational efficiency by converting diesel services to electric traction. This transition, which includes routes like the Lachit Express, is projected to save approximately Rs 140 crore annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 26,411 tonnes per year.
Parallel to these domestic improvements, the NFR is accelerating the Agartala-Akhaura railway line project. This 12.24 km link, which includes an international immigration station at Nischintapur, aims to enable passenger services between Tripura, India, and Bangladesh, supporting regional connectivity and the Act East Policy.
