Northeast Frontier Railway expands electric traction and passenger amenities
Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has converted 12 additional train services from diesel to electric traction, bringing the total number of converted services to 30 during the current financial year. This transition includes several key routes, such as the Lachit Express and the Rangiya-New Tinsukia Express. The shift is projected to reduce annual diesel consumption by approximately 98.55 lakh litres, saving roughly Rs 140 crore annually and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 26,411 tonnes per year. The move is also expected to improve punctuality and reduce transit times by minimizing locomotive changes.
In a separate development, NFR has inaugurated ‘The Terminal’ at Guwahati Railway Station. This 27,381-square-foot facility serves as a dedicated dining, shopping, and recreation space. Developed under the New Innovative Non-Fare Revenue Ideas Scheme (NINFRIS), the hub features a dining zone with various restaurant brands, a flea market for local handicrafts and souvenirs, and an indoor soft play area for children. The project was awarded to Fusion Edge Solution under a five-year contract valued at Rs 2.27 crore.
