Assam and Odisha Flood Relief Efforts Intensify
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported that the number of flood‑affected people fell to 1.78 lakh, with the death toll remaining at 82. Seven districts – Golaghat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Bajali, Dhemaji, Sonitpur and Jorhat – continue to be hit, and 44 relief camps shelter about 15,000 displaced residents. The North‑East Affected Area Development Society (NEADS) has begun a Multi‑Sectoral Post‑Disaster Needs Assessment in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat to map losses in housing, agriculture, livestock and infrastructure. In Tezpur, rapid Brahmaputra erosion threatened the historic Tal Kalibari locality, prompting visits by MLA Prithviraj Rava, Deputy Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das and police officer Bhaskarjyoti Bezbaruah.
In Sivasagar district, fresh erosion damaged the Disang embankment at Betbari Barpatra, leading to emergency reinforcement measures. Meanwhile, Odisha faces one of its worst monsoon floods, with over 8 lakh people affected across 20 districts. The Union government approved a Rs 500 crore grant for the state’s disaster response, and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi surveyed the damage from the air. Power outages and a kerosene shortage left more than 6,500 residents in Jagatsinghpur without light or fuel.
