Northeast India space workshop targets regional space economy

The Northeast India Space Workshop 2026, organized by the Space Industry Association of India (SIA-India) and the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC), highlighted the region's potential to develop a robust space economy. Experts noted that the region's unique geography and talent can be leveraged to create space-based solutions for challenges such as floods, landslides, agriculture, and border management.

Participants emphasized transitioning from simple disaster monitoring to real-time intelligence using satellite observations, AI, and ground sensors. A major outcome of the workshop is the proposal for a Centre for Space Entrepreneurship in Assam. This initiative, involving SIA-India, the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), and the Government of Assam, aims to connect startups and academia with technical expertise and market opportunities.

Future efforts will focus on converting scientific research into commercial products and practical governance tools. The next phase of the initiative is planned for Tripura, where stakeholders will identify specific state needs that can be addressed through space and geospatial technologies.
