Northeastern Japan Experiences Magnitude 7.2 Earthquake, Injuries Reported

A powerful earthquake measuring magnitude 7.2 (initially reported as 6.9) struck off the coast of Iwate Prefecture in Japan's Tohoku region, with a depth of about 50 km. The strongest shaking was felt in Aomori Prefecture, where intensity reached the upper‑6 level on Japan’s seismic scale, making standing and walking extremely difficult.

Authorities confirmed no tsunami warning and only minor sea‑level changes. Eight to eleven people were injured, mainly from falls and falling objects; none of the injuries were life‑threatening. Rail services, including parts of the Tohoku Shinkansen, were temporarily suspended for safety inspections, and expressways in Aomori were closed for checks. Nuclear facilities operated by Tohoku Electric Power and Tokyo Electric Power reported no abnormalities.

A separate magnitude‑5.8 quake later struck Chiba Prefecture, but caused no casualties. Aftershocks are expected, and emergency teams remain on standby for further response.
