Northeastern Somalia mandates airline approval for weapons and troops
The Northeastern Regional State of Somalia has issued a security directive requiring all airlines operating within its controlled territories to obtain formal authorization before transporting weapons or military personnel.
Signed on October 4 by Security Ministry Director General Mohamud Hussein Jibriil Ateye, the order mandates that carriers secure clearance from the Ministry of Security for such flights. Additionally, individuals or organizations intending to move authorized weapons must submit applications at least three days prior to departure and carry official ministry documentation.
The measure aims to strengthen regional oversight of arms shipments and security personnel movements as the administration works to consolidate its institutions in areas centered on Las Anod. While the directive applies to all airlines in the region, officials have not specified the penalties for non-compliance or cited a specific incident that prompted the new rules.
