Northern Cyprus announces support package for Filo Jet shipwreck victims
Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has announced a comprehensive support package for those affected by the Filo Jet shipwreck that occurred on August 30. The government has implemented new regulations focusing on legal, residency, and health assistance to aid victims and their families.
In collaboration with the Cyprus Turkish Bar Association, victims will receive legal support and exemptions from judicial expenses, including court fees, stamp duties, and expert witness costs. To ensure families can pursue justice locally, the government is providing residency facilitation for foreign nationals involved or related to the victims, preventing them from having to return home during legal proceedings.
Additionally, foreign survivors and the families of the deceased or missing will have access to free public health services in Northern Cyprus until August 30, 2027.
Separately, Ahmet Serdaroğlu, President of the Hür-İş Federation, has called for greater scrutiny regarding the regulatory oversight prior to the accident, emphasizing that authorities must be held accountable for preventing such tragedies.
