Northern Cyprus demands international recognition of sovereign equality

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has issued a statement calling on the international community to recognize its sovereign equality and equal international status. The ministry emphasized that its official policy regarding the Cyprus issue is coordinated with Turkey and is predicated on the principle of sovereign equality as a prerequisite for any permanent settlement on the island.

The statement rejected recent proposals regarding rotating presidencies and the allocation of two seats for Turkish Cypriots in the European Parliament. Northern Cyprus officials argued that such models assume a unified state structure, which contradicts their stance on two separate, sovereign entities. They characterized these proposals as attempts to validate the existing Republic of Cyprus framework, which they claim excludes Turkish Cypriot representation and resource sharing.

The dispute on the island has persisted since 1974, dividing Cyprus into a Turkish north and a Greek south. Following the collapse of UN-sponsored reunification talks in Crans-Montana in 2017, no formal mediated negotiations have taken place to resolve the conflict.
