Cyprus sovereignty and political status dispute

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has issued statements reaffirming its official policy, coordinated with Turkey, which is based on the principles of sovereign equality and equal international status. The TRNC maintains that the existence of two separate peoples and two independent, sovereign states on the island is a fundamental reality.

In response to recent developments, the TRNC rejected the proposed ‘alternating presidency’ model, describing it as ‘diametrically opposed’ to its position. Officials argued that such a model implies a unitary state structure, which contradicts their stance on two separate entities. The TRNC also criticized European Parliament initiatives regarding the allocation of ‘two seats for Turkish Cypriots,’ arguing these moves would imply recognition of the Republic of Cyprus.

Domestically, the TRNC is experiencing disruptions to student transportation services. Minister of Education Nazım Çavuşoğlu reported that services have not resumed despite a government-approved 40 percent rate increase. While a protocol was prepared and sent to transport associations Kar-İş and KTTTB, the parties failed to sign the agreement by the deadline, causing delays in the start of the school year.

The dispute has persisted since 1974, dividing the island into a Turkish north and a Greek south. Following the collapse of UN-sponsored reunification talks in Crans-Montana in 2017, no formal mediated negotiations have taken place to resolve the conflict.
