Northern Cyprus PM Ünal Üstel offers water and energy to Greek Cypriots after gas pact

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said the natural‑gas supply agreement signed with Turkey was expected to upset the Greek Cypriot authorities but emphasized that the North will continue to sign international deals. He offered water and electricity to the south, stating, “Susuz kaldığınızda size de su verebiliriz” and “elektriğiniz tükendiğinde elektrik de verebiliriz,” and highlighted Turkey’s “Asrın Projesi” that already supplies water to the north. Üstel criticised the Greek Cypriot Foreign Ministry’s claim that the agreement is illegal, describing the reaction as “expected” and warning that the Turkish‑Cypriot community will remain a “bright star” with water, electricity and natural gas. He also announced forthcoming projects on natural‑gas, electricity and fiber‑optic infrastructure with Turkey.

The statements were made in written responses to the Greek Cypriot Foreign Ministry and in various news releases, reiterating the North’s readiness to share resources and its determination to maintain international cooperation despite regional tensions.
