President Tufan Erhürman meets EU Vice‑President Raffaele Fitto on confidence‑building measures

President Tufan Erhürman of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus held a written‑statement meeting with European Commission Senior Vice‑President Raffaele Fitto on 31 July 2026. Erhürman said the recent unilateral and biased actions of EU bodies, especially the European Parliament, have weakened Turkish‑Cypriot trust in the Union.

He urged that confidence‑building measures are needed with the EU as well as with the Greek‑Cypriot leadership. The discussion covered the urgent implementation of the Direct Trade Agreement, difficulties in applying the Green Line Regulation, and ongoing problems regarding EU citizenship and property rights for Turkish Cypriots. Erhürman also called for an end to the isolation of Turkish Cypriots, stressing that obstacles preventing their participation in the international community – particularly for children – must be removed. While noting the EU cannot sit at any future negotiation table on the Cyprus issue, he said the Union could play a constructive role in measures that foster trust.
