Northern Cyprus President rejects UN‑proposed NATO security model for the island

The United Nations special representative for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguín, presented a draft plan that would replace the 1960 guarantor system with a NATO‑based security framework. The proposal calls for the transfer of parts of the Maras, Guzelyurt and Mesaoria regions to the Greek‑Cypriot side, a phased 2‑3‑year transition, and the deployment of Turkish, Greek, British, French and U.S. troops on the island. In return, the Turkish‑Cypriot community would receive formal recognition, political equality, and direct trade, flight and contact links.

Turkey’s Defence Ministry said the proposal does not alter Turkey’s Cyprus policy and reiterated that Turkish security is synonymous with the security of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Northern Cyprus President Tufan Erhürman warned that no idea contrary to Turkish‑Cypriot interests will be implemented, emphasizing that Turkey will not give a “yes” to any plan that threatens the community’s rights or security. He dismissed media manipulation claims, pledged to continue the process with patience and determination, and affirmed that the Turkish‑Cypriot side will remain steadfast against external pressure.
