Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Ünal Üstel initiates fiber‑optic rollout for digital sovereignty

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel announced that the field work for the fiber‑optic infrastructure project in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will begin shortly. Under a protocol signed with Turkey, the project aims to provide high‑speed fiber internet to homes, businesses, schools, hospitals and public institutions, with the goal of covering a large portion of the territory by the end of 2027. Üstel described the network as a strategic investment to strengthen digital sovereignty, data security and the island’s overall competitiveness, emphasizing its importance for e‑government and cyber‑security.

In parallel, Üstel highlighted ongoing health‑sector investments, noting that four new hospitals—including the new Lefkoşa State Hospital and the Pamuklu‑Karpaz Hospital—are under construction and slated for completion by 2027, alongside the completion of previously delayed facilities in Güzelyurt and Girne. He framed these projects as part of a broader effort to modernise the region’s infrastructure and improve public services.
