Northern Cyprus pushes project‑based education and post‑quake school upgrades

At a workshop hosted by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’s parliament, officials highlighted a push for project‑based learning and broader educational reform. Speakers urged students to share their families’ histories and emphasized that quality education should extend beyond classroom lectures.

Education Minister Nazım Çavuşoğlu outlined goals for a digital, resilient school system, noting that after the 6 February earthquakes, 128 schools underwent seismic testing, 69 entered strengthening programmes and 40 have completed upgrades. New construction includes 30 schools, 622 additional classrooms, and the addition of laboratories, libraries and sports facilities. He also reported that every school now has internet access and that prefabricated classrooms are being used where needed.

The event, attended by members of the National Unity Party, civil‑society groups and education experts, called for equal access to qualified education, accelerated digital transformation and continued support for teacher development.
