Northern Cyprus education reforms

In late July 2026, officials in the Turkish‑controlled northern part of Cyprus pushed a Higher‑Education Amendment Bill, aiming to expand university enrollment for 2026‑27, strengthen the accreditation body YÖDAK, and launch a joint “higher‑education diplomacy” with Turkey to gain international recognition for Northern Cyprus diplomas. At the same time, a Turkish MP raised concerns about the fairness of the national OBP admissions scoring system, calling for greater oversight.

By early August 2026, the focus broadened to the entire school system. A parliamentary workshop highlighted a shift toward project‑based learning and digital, resilient schools, especially after the February 6 earthquakes. Authorities reported seismic testing of 128 schools, strengthening programmes for 69, and completion of upgrades at 40. New construction added 30 schools, 622 classrooms, and upgraded facilities such as labs, libraries, and sports areas, while ensuring internet access for every school and using prefabricated classrooms where needed. The event called for equal access, accelerated digital transformation, and continued teacher development.
