Northern Emilia‑Romagna towns seek emergency funding after July storms cause €6.5 million damage

In July 2024, a series of severe weather events—including strong winds on July 15 and heavy hail on July 20—struck the northern part of the Emilia‑Romagna region, affecting eight municipalities that belong to the Union of Municipalities of Modena Area North. The communal assessments recorded roughly €6.5 million in damage to public assets such as schools, sports facilities, cemeteries, infrastructure, green areas, street lighting and trees. Agricultural enterprises also reported significant losses from hail, wind and intense rain.

The eight mayors jointly appealed to all relevant authorities—regional, national and sectoral—to provide swift, coordinated assistance. They urged farmers to report losses to organisations such as Coldiretti, CIA Agricoltori Italiani and Confagricoltura so that compensation measures can be evaluated and applied. The mayors called on the Emilia‑Romagna regional government and the Italian state to allocate the necessary extraordinary resources to support municipalities, citizens and the agricultural sector in coping with the emergency.
