Northern Germany faces heavy highway traffic during holiday season

Travelers in Northern Germany are facing significant traffic delays due to the end of the summer holiday season and a specific road accident. On the A7 motorway near Flensburg, a truck accident caused a multi-hour full closure, disrupting traffic for those returning from Denmark. Heavy congestion was also reported near the Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg, with queues extending five kilometers in both directions, and significant delays on the A1 motorway.

To mitigate holiday traffic, a seasonal truck driving ban is currently in effect across Germany. From July 1 to August 31, trucks with a total weight exceeding 7.5 tons are prohibited from driving on certain motorways, including sections of the A1, A3, A5, A7, A8, and A9, on Saturdays between 7:00 and 20:00. Violations can result in fines of approximately 570 euros for vehicle owners and 120 euros for drivers. Exceptions are granted for specific circumstances, such as the transport of perishable goods or certain combined road-rail-port logistics.
