Northern Gulf weather system raises chance of tropical development

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring an area of disturbed weather and an upper‑level low in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. Early forecasts gave the system a low probability of intensifying, but the latest advisory increased the chance of it becoming a tropical depression to about 60%, up from roughly 20% a day earlier.

Forecasters do not expect rapid strengthening, but heavy rain is likely. The heaviest precipitation is expected over Florida and Alabama, with possible flooding rains reaching Mississippi and Louisiana if the system drifts westward. Concurrently, a heat advisory covers much of southeastern Louisiana, with heat‑index values projected to exceed 110°F through the early week, prompting warnings for outdoor activity and hydration.

Residents along the northern Gulf Coast—from Louisiana through Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle—are advised to stay updated on forecasts and prepare for potential rain, flooding, and extreme heat.
