Heat wave persists; Bertha impacts Gulf Coast

Entities: Miami · Florida · South Florida

Overview

The Southeast heat dome continues to dominate South Florida, with daytime highs above 90 °F and heat‑index values exceeding 105 °F, keeping red‑flag warnings in place. Heat alerts now cover more than 100 million Americans, with indices projected at 110‑120 °F across the Southeast to the northern Plains, prompting advisories to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activity.

Tropical Storm Bertha, the second named storm of the 2026 Atlantic season, made its first U.S. landfall on July 22 in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, with sustained winds near 45 mph. A storm surge of up to three feet and 2–6 inches of rain produced coastal flooding and dangerous rip currents from Louisiana through Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. A second landfall near the Texas‑Louisiana border on July 24 delivered several inches of rain, gusty winds, localized flooding, power outages, knocked‑down trees and travel disruptions. The system weakened to a tropical depression near Galveston while its remnants brought heavy rain to Veracruz, Mexico. Alerts in Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas warned of 50‑75 mm rain and gusts up to 85 km/h. No deaths or major structural damage have been reported.

Offshore, BP, Chevron and other operators suspended production on Gulf platforms, potentially affecting about 1.5 million barrels of crude. The storm’s moisture plume enhanced rainfall and flash‑flood risk inland across Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia and parts of northern Mexico.
