Portadown standoff continues as Drumcree parade dispute enters third day

A major standoff in Portadown has entered its third day following a court ruling that overturned a long-standing ban on the Orange Order marching along the Garvaghy Road. While the Parades Commission and courts cleared the way for a small parade, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) blocked the march after an unnotified protest by nationalist residents occupied the route.

Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Bryant is leading negotiations to resolve the impasse, describing a potential solution as “tantalisingly just a bit far away.” Residents are calling for the appointment of an international mediator to break the deadlock, while the Orange Order seeks guarantees that their right to march will be upheld.

The incident has caused significant political friction at Stormont. First Minister Michelle O'Neill faced criticism from unionist leaders after participating in the blockade, an action she defended as standing with residents against sectarian intimidation. The dispute has raised concerns regarding the stability of the region's power-sharing government.
