Chris Bryant bans Orange Order parade in Portadown to prevent unrest

Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Bryant has banned an Orange Order parade from traveling through the Garvaghy Road in Portadown, despite the Parades Commission previously granting legal permission for the route. The decision follows a two-week standoff and intense community pressure to prevent potential violence.

PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher advised the intervention, stating that facilitating the march would have required a disproportionate public order response and carried an unacceptable risk of serious injury and disorder. Bryant defended the move in the House of Commons, arguing that upholding the law includes preventing serious disorder.

The decision has sparked significant political tension. DUP leader Gavin Robinson accused the British government of ‘bending the knee’ to threats of violence. Meanwhile, police are conducting investigations into potential lawbreaking during the protests and have invited First Minister Michelle O’Neill for a voluntary interview.
