Northern Ireland Secretary orders review of Parades Commission

Northern Ireland Secretary of State Sir Chris Bryant has ordered an independent, judge-led review into the decision-making processes of the Parades Commission. The move follows a High Court ruling that quashed the commission's restrictions on a proposed Orange Order parade in Portadown.

The High Court identified “errors”, “short cuts”, and “sloppy procedures” in the commission's approach to the Drumcree parade determination. While unionist politicians and the Orange Order had called for the resignation of commissioners, including chair Professor Evelyn Collins, Sir Chris announced that the current members retain his full backing to ensure the institution continues its critical functions.

The review aims to provide assurance and identify improvements to the commission's procedures to help restore public trust. One commissioner, Billy Gamble, has already stepped down following the court ruling.
