Parades Commission legal and procedural review

The High Court in Belfast quashed a decision by the Parades Commission to restrict the annual Orange Order parade at Drumcree in Portadown. The ruling followed a legal challenge after the Commission admitted to procedural errors, specifically that a determination was distributed to commissioners “for information purposes only” rather than being considered in its “final form.” Representing the applicant, John Larkin KC characterized the error as a “scandalous abdication of responsibility,” while Judge McAlinden noted the process “does not stand up to any scrutiny at all.”

In response to the ruling, the Northern Ireland Secretary of State, Sir Chris Bryant, ordered an independent, judge-led review into the Parades Commission’s decision-making processes. While unionist politicians and the Orange Order sought resignations from the commission, Sir Chris maintained his backing for current members to ensure institutional continuity. The review is intended to identify improvements and restore public trust. Following the court's decision, commissioner Billy Gamble has stepped down.
