Northern Italy heat spurs air quality debate and mountain refuge tourism

Intense heat and high pressure are trapping polluted air over the Po Valley, creating stagnant conditions that intensify smog and particulate matter, especially in winter inversions. A 1978 television proposal suggested flattening the Passo del Turchino to open a marine breeze corridor, but experts note that a single mountain cut would be insufficient to move the massive air volume of the basin; the real solution lies in reducing emissions from traffic, industry, heating and agriculture.

As temperatures soar, residents of Verona and surrounding areas are seeking cooler altitudes in the Lessinia plateau. Several mountain refuges – Malga Moscarda, Malga Lessinia, Rifugio Primaneve, Malga Malera and others – offer fresh alpine air, panoramic views and traditional dishes such as homemade gnocchi, polenta, cheese and game meat, providing a popular escape from the heat in the plains.
