Northern New Mexico faces flooding after heavy rainfall
Heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding and road closures across northern New Mexico, particularly affecting the Las Vegas and Mora areas. In Las Vegas, the Gallinas River rose approximately 3.5 feet overnight, with water levels fluctuating due to debris. Local officials have issued warnings for residents to avoid the river corridor, including the Gallinas River Walk Park and several key streets such as Grand Avenue, Independence Avenue, Mills Avenue, and Bridge Street.
Road closures have been implemented on El Camino, Cinder Road, and Cunningham Road due to flooding and potential pavement damage. Authorities are urging motorists not to attempt to cross flooded roads or bypass barricades, as water may hide washed-out surfaces or debris. There is also an increased risk of wildlife, such as bears and elk, moving into populated areas due to the weather.
In the Mora area, flooding has saturated fields and dry creeks, exacerbated by the Calf Canyon and Hermits Peak burn scars. While significant flooding has been reported, officials noted minimal structural damage and no rescues have been reported during this latest round of rain. National Guard and county fire personnel are monitoring the situation as weather conditions remain unpredictable.
