Northern Territory Police to receive $6.5 million TASER 10 upgrade
Northern Territory Police will receive a $6.5 million upgrade to equip more than 750 officers with next-generation TASER 10 devices. This rollout aims to replace the TASER X2 units that have been in service for over a decade.
The new technology offers significant functional improvements, including a maximum firing range of 13.7 metres, nearly double the 7.6 metres provided by the previous model. Additionally, the TASER 10 allows officers to deploy up to 10 individual probes without reloading, whereas the older units fired only two probes simultaneously.
Pilot deployments are scheduled to begin in Alice Springs, Katherine, and Wadeye, with a staged rollout to follow that prioritizes frontline patrol officers and specialist high-risk units. Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro stated the investment is intended to provide officers with more options to safely resolve volatile incidents and avoid escalating to higher levels of force. Police Commissioner Martin Dole noted that training and policy updates are already underway to integrate the new assets into frontline capability.
