Northern Territory pepper spray legalisation
Overview
The Northern Territory government has permanently legalised the use of oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray, or pepper spray, for self-defence. This decision follows a 12-month trial that reported a “99 per cent success rate”.
Under the new regulations, residents aged 16 and above may use the spray. For those aged 16 and 17, the spray can be purchased and carried if they are accompanied and authorised by a parent or guardian. The policy also permits use by security guards, licensees, and crowd controllers while they are performing lawful duties at licensed premises.
Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro stated that the non-lethal deterrent provides a “vital window of time” for individuals to escape dangerous situations without resorting to hand-to-hand combat.
