Northern Territory reports 13% drop in total offences

The Northern Territory government reports a significant decrease in crime, citing a 13 per cent drop in total offences for the year ending June 2026. Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro stated the figures demonstrate the effectiveness of the government's law-and-order strategy, which includes changes to bail laws.

According to Acting Commander Kirsten Engels, sexual assault cases fell by 11 per cent, property offences decreased by 16 per cent, and motor vehicle thefts dropped by 28 per cent. Regional data shows total offences in Alice Springs fell by 30 per cent, while Darwin saw a 13 per cent reduction.

In response to these trends and ongoing needs, the government announced plans for a 1,200-bed Men's Remand Centre and a new 200-bed women's centre.
