Northern Territory correctional facility expansion

Overview

The Northern Territory government has initiated plans to expand correctional facilities to address inmate numbers and community safety. This includes a proposal for a 1,200-bed men’s remand centre near Darwin to be designed, financed, built, and operated by a private partner, alongside a 200-bed government-operated women’s facility at Holtze. The privatization plan drew criticism from the NT Workers Union, which called it ‘one of the most reckless corrections policy decisions ever proposed in the Northern Territory’.

By August 2026, the government reported a 13 per cent decrease in total offences for the year ending June 2026, attributing the decline to law-and-order strategies and bail law changes. Reported reductions included an 11 per cent drop in sexual assault cases, a 16 per cent decrease in property offences, and a 28 per cent drop in motor vehicle thefts. Despite these declining crime rates, the government maintained its plans for the new remand and women’s centres.
