Northern Vietnam electricity bills surge in June amid heatwave

In June, households and businesses across northern Vietnam reported sharply higher electricity bills as an extended heatwave drove air‑conditioner use and other appliances to peak levels. A Hanoi resident saw her monthly bill rise from about 1 million VND to over 2.2 million VND, while a family in Phú Thọ paid more than 4.3 million VND, the highest in years. A small shop in Hanoi experienced a continual increase, reaching over 3.3 million VND in June.

Not all customers faced large jumps; some families that limited usage reported bills similar to previous months. The state‑run EVNNPC, which distributes power to 17 northern provinces, said the grid load repeatedly exceeded 20,000 MW, setting a record of 21,142 MW on 24 June and a daily generation peak of 447.6 million kWh on 25 June. The surge in consumption pushed many users into the highest tariff bracket, inflating bills further and adding financial pressure on households and businesses.

The utility warned that as demand remains high during the hot summer months, consumers should monitor usage to avoid unexpected charges.
