Vietnam power strain, record output, storage push
Entities: Đào Văn Thuấn · Vietnam Government · Flat Vietnam Co., Ltd. · Bridgestone · Pegatron
Overview
Vietnam’s grid continues to feel the strain of an unprecedented summer heatwave, with EVN reporting a historic 1.215 billion kWh output on 25 June and a peak load of 57,537 MW. Coal‑fired units remain the primary back‑stop, while gas generation and imports have risen sharply. The utility urges large consumers to shift demand and is preparing additional diesel generators and storage assets.
The revised National Energy Development Plan VIII prioritises battery energy‑storage systems (BESS), targeting 10‑16 GW by 2030 and aiming for renewable (non‑hydro) capacity to supply 28‑36 % of total power, with solar projected at 46‑73 GW. Decree No 243/2026/ND‑CP creates a legal framework for BESS integration and expands rooftop‑solar self‑consumption rules.
BESS is being promoted for commercial buildings—offices, malls, hotels and hospitals—using lithium‑ion or LiFePO₄ cells coupled with smart energy‑management platforms to store off‑peak or rooftop‑solar electricity and release it during peaks, lowering operating costs and reducing grid reliance.
A 2026 roadmap links electric‑vehicle charging with rooftop solar, under Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc’s Directive 10. In the DEEP C industrial park, rooftop‑solar capacity grew over 70 % between April and June 2024 to about 21 MWp, with firms such as Flat Vietnam, Bridgestone and Pegatron installing projects. The park targets roughly 64 MWp by 2030, positioning green power as a decisive factor for foreign‑direct investment.
An energy‑security task force, adjusted fuel taxes and measures to stabilise supply chains underscore the view that reliable, affordable energy is a core element of national security. Initiatives from Huawei’s Luterra platform, Solar & Storage Live Vietnam and Sungrow’s climate‑adapted inverters and battery modules aim to boost solar self‑consumption, lower costs and enhance overall grid resilience.
