Northern Vietnam faces heavy rain and extreme heat

Meteorological agencies forecast intense rainfall across the mountainous northern region of Vietnam, with some locations recording over 100 mm in a single event. Areas such as Tân Thịnh (Lào Cai), Năng Yên (Phú Thọ) and Trung Hội (Thái Nguyên) are expected to see up to 126 mm of rain, raising the risk of flash flooding, landslides and localized flooding in low‑lying zones. Temperatures in the north have fluctuated, dropping 3‑4 °C after a brief heat spike, then climbing again to 35‑38 °C as hot westerly low‑pressure systems intensify. Experts attribute the volatile pattern to a strong low‑pressure trough descending from southern China, combined with a hot low‑pressure system over the west, while a tropical low over the South China Sea influences the central and southern regions. The forecast suggests alternating periods of heavy rain and scorching heat through early June, with the potential for severe thunderstorms, hail, strong winds and lightning.
