Intense rain showers on 6‑8 August 2026 drenched northern Vietnam, with localized totals exceeding 70 mm – for example 129.8 mm at Nậm Hàng (Lai Châu), 85.2 mm at Phú Tiến (Phú Thọ) and 79 mm at Chúc Sơn (Hanoi). Forecasts from the National Centre for Hydro‑Meteorological Forecasting warned that the rain would taper off after the night of 7 August, while temperatures would rise sharply, bringing a possible heat wave on 9‑10 August with highs of 35‑37 °C in parts of the north.

The heavy rain triggered landslides on major highways. On the night of 5‑6 August a landslide on National Highway 6 near Muối Nọi, Sơn La province, buried a car and blocked the road. Emergency teams cleared the slide, rescued the vehicle’s occupants and evacuated 84 households (395 people) to temporary shelters, providing food, water and bedding. Earlier on 5 August, more than 200 residents were evacuated from flood‑affected houses along Highway 6. A separate slide on National Highway 2 in Tuyên Quang province also disrupted traffic and required police traffic‑control and road‑clearing equipment.

Authorities deployed excavators, police units and rescue crews, set up warning signs and directed traffic to ensure safety. No injuries were reported from the car‑burial incident.
