Vietnam weather warning: Heavy rain and flood risks for Northern regions

Northern and North Central Vietnam are facing a period of intense rainfall and extreme weather starting the night of August 17. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts widespread heavy rain through August 21, with total rainfall expected to reach between 150-300mm, and in some areas exceeding 450mm.

This weather pattern poses significant risks, including local flooding, flash floods, and landslides, particularly in mountainous and low-lying regions. In Hanoi, the rainfall may overwhelm urban drainage systems, leading to localized flooding and traffic congestion. The transition from intense heat to heavy rain also increases the likelihood of extreme phenomena such as lightning, hail, and strong wind gusts.

In response to the threat, the Vietnamese government has issued urgent directives. Deputy Prime Minister Hồ Quốc Dũng, acting on behalf of the Prime Minister, has ordered ministries and local authorities to proactively prepare for potential disasters. Authorities are urged to monitor weather developments closely and implement measures to protect lives and property, noting that similar weather events earlier this year have already caused significant casualties and property damage.
