Northern Vietnam braces for widespread heavy rains and flood risk

The National Hydro‑Meteorological Center has warned that a major rain band will affect northern Vietnam from 16 July through at least 20 July 2026. Forecasts show many locations in the mountainous and mid‑elevation districts of Lai Châu, Điện Biên, Lào Cai, Sơn La, Tuyên Quang and Thái Nguyên receiving 100‑200 mm of rain, with isolated totals exceeding 350 mm. The intense rainfall is expected to trigger flash‑flood alerts on several rivers (BĐ2‑3 levels) and raise the likelihood of landslides in steep terrain. Six northern provinces have been placed on a high‑alert list for potential flooding and slope failure. The system will later shift southward, bringing scattered thunderstorms to the central and southern regions, but the most severe impacts remain confined to the north during this period.
