Northland claims Ranfurly Shield after 48-year drought

Northland has ended a 48-year drought to claim the Ranfurly Shield, defeating Canterbury 36-12 at One NZ Stadium in Christchurch. This victory marks the first time the Taniwha have held the trophy, known as the ‘Log o’ Wood’, since 1978.

After an early response from Canterbury, which saw tries from Tahlor Cahill and Jone Rova, Northland took control before halftime. Tries from Marcel Renata and Sam Nock helped the visitors secure a 21-12 lead at the break. Rivez Reihana contributed significantly to the scoreline, converting four tries and adding a penalty for a total of 11 points.

Northland maintained their dominance in the second half, keeping Canterbury scoreless. Rob Rush secured the historic win with two tries, including one in the 80th minute. The win is described by players as a way to inspire the next generation of rugby talent in the region.
