Ranfurly Shield competition: Canterbury loses shield tos

Overview

Canterbury reclaimed the Ranfurly Shield in the National Provincial Championship (NPC) before losing it to Northland.

On August 9, Canterbury defeated Otago 19-15 in Dunedin to retake the shield. Despite playing with 13 men for a period due to a yellow card for Manumaua Letiu, Canterbury secured the win with tries from Brodie McAlister and Jamie Hannah.

Canterbury then defended the shield on August 15 in Christchurch, defeating Bay of Plenty 33-28. After establishing a 21-7 halftime lead, Canterbury withstood a significant comeback attempt by the Steamers, who leveled the score at 28-all. A 70th-minute try by Toby Bell ultimately secured the win.

On August 21, Northland ended a 48-year drought to claim the Ranfurly Shield, defeating Canterbury 36-12 at One NZ Stadium in Christchurch. Northland, also known as the Taniwha, secured the trophy—referred to as the ‘Log o’ Wood’—for the first time since 1978. After Canterbury responded to an early Northland lead with tries from Tahlor Cahill and Jone Rova, Northland took a 21-12 lead into halftime. The visitors kept Canterbury scoreless in the second half, with Rob Rush scoring two tries to finalize the historic victory.
